ISAAC Members Map Life For The World Trust training

University of Gloucestershire Certificate in Substance Misuse Care and Counselling

With 41 years of experience in the addiction field and a member of ISAAC from its inception, Life For The World Trust recognises the value of networking with other Christian organisations around the World specialising in this work.

Since 2004 LFTW has run eight university certificate courses and to date 56 students have graduated with another 16 awaiting accreditation. The vast majority of these are actively working with addicts and their families to bring release in Jesus’ name.

This Bible-based course is the only university accredited substance misuse course in the country. It is validated by the University of Gloucestershire and consists of 19 days formal training, normally on a day release basis once a fortnight over 9 to 12 months in a local setting.

The qualifications for entry are:

• A commitment to work with drug/alcohol victims and their families.

• An ability to study at about NVQ level 3-4.

• The aptitude to do some background reading, relate their learning to practice, complete four written assignments and undertake a 50-hour placement in a rehabilitation setting.

The Certificate Course has four modules:

SMCC 1: A Framework for Understanding Drug Misuse

SMCC 2: The Nature and Range of Addictive Behaviours

SMCC 3: Treatment Options and Church/Community Responses

SMCC 4: Developing Therapeutic Counselling Skills

Courses will start in Sheffield - June ’08, Birmingham - September ’08, Reading/Oxford - January ’09 and Bath/ Bristol - January ’09.
